A Bespoke Suit Made from Off-the-Rack Fabric — Made to Measure by Gucci
Gucci Made to Measure arrived in 2013 as the masculine counterpart to Gucci Premiere, marketed for "the worldly and refined man who demands the very best" with language about bespoke tailoring and Italian luxury. The fragrance community's response was considerably less flattering. On Fragrantica, the average rating sits at 3.50 out of 5, with 33 percent of voters actively disliking it. On Basenotes, one reviewer called it "the absolute lowest point of Gucci's perfume career on the men's side." Made to Measure has since been discontinued, though this has generated none of the mourning that follows a genuinely missed fragrance.
The criticism is not that Made to Measure smells bad -- almost no one says that. The criticism is that it smells like nothing in particular. "A nothing fragrance with no character whatsoever," as one Basenotes member put it. In a house that once produced Gucci Pour Homme, Envy, and Rush, "pleasant but forgettable" was not what the community expected. Made to Measure represents the era when Gucci's fragrance division seemed to be playing it safe to the point of creative abdication.
The opening is the strongest moment. Bergamot, French lavender, orange blossom, and anise create a fresh, slightly spicy first impression. Some noses detect a promising plum note in these initial minutes that suggests the fragrance might go somewhere interesting. One Basenotes reviewer found the "initial burst is quite plum" and genuinely different from generic designer openings.
That promise evaporates quickly. The heart of nutmeg, cinnamon, water lily, juniper berries, and plum should, in theory, provide warmth and complexity. In practice, reviewers consistently report the mid-notes dissipating rapidly, leaving a "boring, generic, sweet, slightly powdery lavender with bergamot" that could belong to any number of designer masculines.
The base presents labdanum, patchouli, leather, and amber on paper. On skin, multiple reviewers note the base notes barely register. "They just don't exist -- there's no base here," wrote one frustrated Basenotes member. Another complained that the drydown on their skin "smells like I spilled orange juice on myself." The overall trajectory is from promising opening to anonymous middle to absent conclusion.
The community positions Made to Measure as a warm-weather daytime fragrance, and this is where it performs least objectionably. Spring and summer are its usable seasons, with a 22 percent day versus 15 percent night community lean. The composition lacks the depth and weight for fall or winter, and the weak projection makes it invisible in cold air.
Casual daily wear and office environments are its natural territory. This is a fragrance for days when you want to smell clean and vaguely pleasant without any risk of anyone noticing -- or objecting to -- your choice. It is not a date fragrance, a statement fragrance, or an occasion fragrance.
Performance is Made to Measure's most damaging weakness. The community overwhelmingly reports poor longevity, with many placing it at 2 to 4 hours despite liberal application. Some manage 5 to 6 hours with heavy spraying, but after the first 2 hours, the fragrance retreats to a skin scent that barely registers.
Projection is modest at best. Five to six sprays will produce a moderate initial presence that fades quickly. The absence of a functional base accord means there is nothing to anchor the composition on skin over time. This is simply not a fragrance built for endurance.
Made to Measure does have its defenders, though they are outnumbered. One Fragrantica user called it "refined, elegant yet modern" and reported compliments from women of all ages. Another described it as "a well done generic cologne" suitable for a man "who wants to smell attractive but not have to put too much thought into what he is wearing." One wise Basenotes voice counseled: "If you like it, wear it. Just because something is unpopular here doesn't mean it won't work for you."
The majority view is less kind. "It really has no character whatsoever," wrote one Basenotes member, comparing it to "processed cheese slices at a fine cheese festival." Another described it as "olfactive torture to my nose because I can't process it as good or bad, since it is just so perfectly dialed-in to pleasant, overbearingly present, and overwhelmingly devoid of character." The broader narrative is frustration with Gucci's direction: "From what Gucci used to be, these scents are really kinda crappy," noted one user, with others calling it proof that "Gucci has fallen into a comfort zone with safe fragrances."
Made to Measure might suit fragrance beginners who want something completely inoffensive, or men who genuinely prefer to fly under the radar. If you can find it discounted (which should not be difficult given its discontinued status and reputation), it offers a pleasant if unremarkable warm-weather option. Some people in the real world, outside of fragrance forums, will genuinely enjoy its safe, approachable character.
Skip it if you have any investment in fragrance as a hobby, if you expect performance from your purchases, or if you have fond memories of earlier Gucci masculines. The nostalgia will only sharpen the disappointment. Skip it also if scalper pricing applies -- one Basenotes member noted that "it was terrible as a thirty-dollar discount scent, adding a zero won't help."
Gucci Made to Measure is a perfectly pleasant fragrance attached to a deeply unfortunate name. "Made to Measure" implies precision, individuality, and craftsmanship. What the bottle delivers is a generic, ephemeral, inoffensive scent that could have come from any house at any price point. It is not bad. It is simply not anything. In the catalog of a house that once defined Italian masculine elegance, that emptiness is its own kind of failure.
