René Morgenthaler was born in Geneva, Switzerland, and launched his career with an apprenticeship in chemistry at Givaudan, where his aptitude led to his selection for the newly established Givaudan Perfumery School. He rose through the company over several decades, working in Switzerland, Argentina, and the United States, eventually serving as Senior Vice President and Chief Perfumer at Givaudan until his retirement in 2003. He later co-founded SmartFragrances LLC in 2009.
Among his most celebrated creations are Avon Far Away, Calvin Klein CK Be, Calvin Klein Obsession Sheer, and Bond No. 9 Hamptons.
