Molecule 01 by Escentric Molecules needs almost no introduction to fragrance enthusiasts — the single-molecule concept launched by Geza Schoen in 2006 became a niche industry landmark and has been discussed, debated, and replicated ever since. The Limited Edition (pid 39204, released around 2016) is the same composition in a black bottle rather than the standard clear one, with community members noting it is "perceived as slightly more intense" than the regular version — though the formula is essentially identical.

This review is, in practice, a review of Molecule 01 itself. The bottle is the differentiator. The experience is not.

What It Smells Like

Iso E Super — or more precisely, the related captive molecule Iso Gamma Super — is the sole ingredient. IFF holds the exclusive rights to Iso Gamma Super, which is heavier, woodier, and more mineralic than standard Iso E Super. The practical effect: a dry, soft, warm woody scent that community members compare to cedar — not quite cedar, but in that family.

Here is where the description gets complicated, because Molecule 01 does not smell the same on everyone, or even the same throughout the day. In the first moments: a clean, diffusive woody warmth, sometimes mineral and slightly smoky. Within an hour: depending on skin temperature and chemistry, notes of bergamot, lemon, or cedar may emerge. Late in the wear: close to a pure skin scent, warm and quiet.
